Support
Recess is a small app, and you should be able to get a small-app experience when something goes wrong. Most things are solved on this page. Anything that isn't, email me and you'll get a reply from a person — usually within a day.
1. Get in Touch
The fastest way to reach support is email. There is no ticket system, no chatbot, and no business hours — just hello@kester.work.
When you write in, include the version of Recess (find it in the menu-bar dropdown → About), your macOS version, and a one-line description of what you expected to happen versus what actually happened. That's almost always enough to fix it.
2. Calendar Sync Isn't Working
Recess reads from the same calendar source as the built-in macOS Calendar app. If a meeting doesn't appear in Recess, it almost certainly isn't reaching Calendar either.
- Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Calendar and confirm Recess is enabled.
- Open the macOS Calendar app and confirm the meeting is visible there with the right time and account.
- In Recess, quit and relaunch from the menu-bar dropdown. This forces a fresh read from the calendar database.
If the event is in Calendar but still not in Recess after a relaunch, email hello@kester.work with a screenshot of the event from Calendar.
3. I'm Not Getting Reminders
Reminders come from macOS, not from a server. If they're not arriving, the OS is silencing them somewhere upstream.
- System Settings → Notifications → Recess: confirm notifications are allowed, alerts are turned on, and sound is enabled if you want one.
- Check Focus / Do Not Disturb in the menu bar. Recess respects DND by default — if you're in a focus mode, that's why it's quiet.
- Confirm Recess is still running (the icon should be in your menu bar). If it's not, relaunch it.
4. Permissions and Access
Recess only asks for the permissions it actually uses: Calendar (read events), Notifications (deliver reminders), and on some versions, Accessibility (to detect which app is in the foreground for activity-aware breaks). Everything is opt-in. If you denied a permission earlier and want to grant it now, do it from System Settings → Privacy & Security and relaunch Recess.
5. Data, Export, and Deletion
Recess does not host an account, so there is nothing to delete on a server. Removing the app deletes its local data. See the Privacy Policy for specifics on what's stored on-device.
If you want a copy of any locally-stored preferences before uninstalling, email hello@kester.work and I'll point you at the right file.
6. Reporting a Bug
Bug reports work best when they include three things:
- What you were trying to do.
- What actually happened.
- The Recess version, your macOS version, and (if possible) a screenshot or short screen recording.
Send all of the above to hello@kester.work.
7. Feature Requests
Recess stays small on purpose. That said, every request is read. If something you want isn't here, send it to hello@kester.work with one sentence of context on the problem you're trying to solve, and it will be considered for a future release.
